Fundamental for Turn Around CEO Page

What do I believe is the first fundamental quality of a Turn Around CEO:

Integrity from the viewpoint of Honesty…

Typically, by the time you need a turnaround CEO, radical culture change is required, and you cannot make any progression unless there’s trust to accept the first move.  And for the uninitiated, don’t confuse a “MOVE” with a “STEP.” They are two very distinctive achievements.

On the surface, it is pretty easy to understand that holding your integrity in the light of truth through your behaviors, actions, and decisions as the CEO sets the expectation for the rest of the organization.  There’s nothing more empowering than turning around a culture when employees conclude that fairness and trust exist under their own volition.  By engaging everyone as professionals by giving them the truth, the people who are going to be the most valuable to the organization are the ones who understand that there should be a difference in monetary value for the problems that the position is solving. However, there is no difference in the scale used to judge the level of expectation and behavior when they measure themselves or the CEO.

A deeper dive into the importance of integrity based on honesty is how it transcends personal impact and is an integral part of the human experience. From business, leadership, and social constructs (such as capitalism, social media, etc.) to religious beliefs is the cornerstone of longevity.

The value is known but genuinely understood by few:

Investor Warren Buffett: “Honesty is a very expensive gift. Don’t expect it from cheap people.”

Jack Welch (from the engineering discipline), Former CEO of General Electric – referred to his leadership integrity/honesty as candor.

“What would happen if, for years and years, you don’t tell someone that they are underperforming, not giving them the chance to try to improve, check whether they can do something else in the company, or alternatively look for somewhere else? And then a recession comes, and you need to fire the person, older and unprepared, in a much tougher market?  Which is crueler?”

While one of the main influences that impact individual values is typically not approached in the workplace, it is imperative that a Turn Around CEO understands where the major morel compass influences are derived from.

Honesty in business is a value cherished by all three major religions(and most other religions): Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. While there are differences in their teachings, there is a common thread that emphasizes the importance of truthfulness and integrity in business dealings.

In Christianity, a well-known verse from the Bible in Colossians 3:9 (New Testament) instructs, “Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old self with its practices.” This verse underscores the Christian belief in rejecting dishonesty in any aspect of life, including business.

In Islam, the Quran emphasizes honesty and integrity in numerous verses, with one notable example being from Surah Al-Baqarah (2:188): “And do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers in order that [they might aid] you [to] [commit] a [sin] known [to be so].”

In Judaism, the Torah teaches the principle of “Lo tignov” (Exodus 20:15), which means “You shall not steal.” This commandment serves as a foundation for the importance of honesty in business dealings, prohibiting theft in all forms.

All three religions share a common belief in the ethical imperative of honesty and integrity in business, promoting fairness and trustworthiness in economic interactions as fundamental values to uphold.

In a discussion of honesty in business that includes perspectives from various belief systems, it’s essential to recognize that atheists, like religious individuals, acknowledge the importance of honesty in business to foster trust, promote fairness, and maintain the integrity of economic interactions. They may draw inspiration from humanist philosophies and ethical codes that emphasize the well-being of individuals and society as a whole, reinforcing the common understanding that honesty in business is a universal and essential principle embraced by people of diverse worldviews.

To summarize, the more profound comment running thread that a Turn Around CEO needs to acknowledge and address is Integrity from the view point of Honesty, this empowers the stakeholders on multiple levels which is vital to the business’s success.

The Second fundamental quality of a Turn Around CEO is servant leadership:

Servant leadership prioritizes the needs and growth of team members, creating a sense of ownership and engagement.  If you genuinely believe in this practice, it resonates throughout your business structure and instead of having a few dedicated people, you will amass a team that buys in.   This is what I call control growth, where team members (including those who work for you and with you) and the company both grow together, confronting the new economic reality, which is long-term sustainability, and profitability and the end of growth at all costs(including the company’s future and employee’s feeling as if it was at their cost).

As Tyler Nottberg (from the engineering discipline), CEO of U.S. Engineering Company Holding, Notes, “On a high-performance team, the servant leader uses his or her experience to teach and mentor others in order to prepare them for confronting uncertainty…. The currency of high-performance teams is trust.”

As Marc Benioff (from the engineering discipline), the CEO of Salesforce, notes, “The business of business is improving the state of the world. It starts with empowering and engaging our employees to make a positive impact.”

The effects of servant leadership also significantly impact the categories:

Trust and Transparency-

Servant leaders build trust through transparency, a vital element in cultural change. Satya Nadella(from the engineering discipline), the CEO of Microsoft, emphasizes this, saying, “The transformation we are driving is about us becoming more agile, innovative, and customer-obsessed. This starts with trust, transparency, and clarity.”

Focus on People:

Servant leaders place people at the center of the organization’s mission. Doug McMillon(from the engineering discipline), the CEO of Walmart, underscores this by stating, “Our people make the difference. A culture that puts people first creates an environment where positive change can thrive.”

Adaptability:

Servant leaders are flexible and adaptable, crucial qualities in change initiatives. As Mary Barra (from the engineering discipline), the CEO of General Motors, articulates, “Change is constant. Adapting and learning is what makes us resilient. Our culture of continuous improvement is our driving force.”

Collaboration:

Collaboration and teamwork are hallmarks of servant leadership. Sundar Pichai (from the engineering discipline), the CEO of Google’s parent company Alphabet, emphasizes the importance of collaboration, saying, “Innovation happens when people work together. A collaborative culture is the foundation of our success.”

Alignment with Values:

Servant leadership aligns with the values of many cultural change initiatives. As Ginni Rometty (from the engineering discipline), former CEO of IBM, notes, “Values drive culture. A culture that reflects our values is a culture that can adapt and thrive.”

Inspiration and Motivation:

Servant leaders inspire and motivate through their example. Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, captures this sentiment, saying, “The best way to predict the future is to create it. A culture of innovation and daring leadership can make the impossible possible.”

Resilience:

Servant leaders exhibit resilience in the face of adversity. As Tim Cook (from the engineering discipline), the CEO of Apple, aptly puts it, “In times of challenge, our culture of resilience and unwavering commitment to our mission propels us forward.”
